Is it possible he just didn’t trust the idea of flying over Syria with the rebels in control of ground to air missiles to get to Iran? Or is that just an idiotic thing to say or even think? I’m leaning towards it being a silly idea
Readers who are not inhabitants of the region might appreciate an explanation/analysis of what makes the different varieties of Islamists fight each other, and also of the mental gymnastics that made the Iranian Islamists support a supposed secular Ba'athist dictator. (I know that Alawites are in some way congruent to Shi'ites, so is it a case of ethnicity trumping religious doctrine?)

I heard somewhere that Alawites are to Shia Muslims kind of similar to how Mormons are to Christians
